Drainage System is a region that consists of a series of indoor rooms, pipes, and tunnels, many of which are partially or fully submerged in water. While more difficult than traversing Industrial Complex, it serves as an alternative path to Garbage Wastes or Subterranean Filtration System due to its compact size.

It is potentially the second region visited as Monk or Survivor and is also ✔️DLC Rivulet's starting region.

Overview

Drainage System is a piped network of waterlogged tunnels and large vats of water. The region is entirely underground and contains a large number of flooded rooms. It is accessible early on from Outskirts, but is more difficult to traverse than the intended route through Industrial Complex. There are two long one-way drops in the region which funnel Slugcat towards the lower, flooded path towards Garbage Wastes, and make returning to Outskirts difficult. The way to Subterranean Filtration System serves as a quick shortcut towards Subterranean, but similarly features diving challenges.

Some rooms are almost completely flooded with only small pockets of air and require extended dives to traverse. The water level of certain pools rises and lowers, putting Slugcat at risk of drowning or being attacked by aquatic predators. This is paired with the difficult to navigate geometry of the region, making the environment a demanding task to traverse.

In ✔️DLC Downpour, Chimney Canopy The Gutter in Chimney Canopy also connects to the upper right part of Drainage System with a high Karma level requirement.

    Points of Interest

    Tips

    • Salamanders are more dangerous in water than land, due to their ability to dive.
    • Red Leeches can be temporarily stunned using Snails. Snails can also stun the player at close proximity.
    • Passing through the lower, flooded section of the map requires extended dives from one pocket of air to the next. When underwater, returning to the previous air pocket to regain breath and try again can be useful if experiencing difficulties passing the terrain smoothly.
    • Bubble Weed can be used to dive for extended periods of time without resurfacing, when available.
    • The red Safari collectible in DLC located in DS_A01.[v1.9 Downpour only]
    • The water in some rooms in the past lowers and rises. This allows ✔️DLC Artificer to cross the flooded tunnels, as their breath time would be too low to pass otherwise.[v1.9 Downpour only]
    • Though it's not the only way to circle back to Outskirts, it's possible to travel backwards through Drainage System from the Subterranean Filtration System gate whilst avoiding the Leech tunnels at the bottom of the region, as demonstrated in the video below.

    Trivia

    • Drainage System was one of the 4 regions present in early alpha versions of the game.
    • Drainage System is one of the smallest post-Downpour regions, harbouring only 52 rooms, only beaten by Sky Islands.
    • The Drainage System/ Chimney Canopy connection is one of the only two connections between vanilla regions added by downpour, the other being Garbage Wastes/ Shaded Citadel.
    • In ✔️DLC Downpour, the rightmost drop in the 3-pipe room DS-B03 can be scaled up like the other two pipes, adding a route back to Outskirts from the tricky right side region.
