Dreams are a mechanic closely tied to Hibernation. As the player progresses through the game, they will encounter one-time cutscenes known as dreams. These occur when certain parameters have been filled.
Monk and Survivor's dreams may be separated into 4 categories, in descending order of priority: Iterator, Void, Overseer and Family dreams. All of them can be predicted due to to their defined requirements.
Iterator Dreams
Iterator dreams happen after meeting Looks to the Moon or Five Pebbles.

Overseer Dreams
Four cycles must first pass before the player can encounter an Overseer dream, as well as there needing to be at least two cycles in between each. Additionally, they only play if the Overseer does not dislike Slugcat. Overseer dreams have a specific order; progression through it cannot go backwards, but may skip a dream if the requirements of the following one are met earlier. The first Overseer dream plays if only the basic requirements are met; the second one plays if the Overseer has shown projections of Looks to the Moon during the previous cycle, and Slugcat has slept in Garbage Wastes or Shaded Citadel at least two cycles before; the third Overseer dream plays in Shoreline.
Family Dreams
Family dreams only occur if no other dream has higher priority and the previous dream was at least 3 cycles before. Like Overseer dreams, their order of appearance is defined. The first family dream plays if only the basic requirements are met; the second family dream plays at least eight cycles after the first one; the third family dream plays at least seven cycles after the second one; the final family dream (which notably shares the art of the void up sequence) plays at least 15 cycles after the third one.

Artificer Dreams
This section contains major plot details from Artificer. If you have not made significant progress or completed the game as Artificer, then read no further!
Artificer is the only character to feature playable dream sequences. These dreams are in a set sequence depicting their backstory.
Artificer once had two Slugpups, one green and one blue, but they were both killed by Scavengers due to one taking a Pearl from a Scavenger Toll. Because of this, Artificer has taken perpetual revenge on the Scavengers.
After the fifth dream or after the player has killed the Chieftain Scavenger, all dreams are replaced with a single nightmare. In this nightmare, the Artificer is locked in a small tunnel room with no exits, and the only thing they are able to do is (optionally) kill a scavenger locked in with them. During this nightmare, the regular "dream" sound effect that plays is heavily distorted and drawn out.
Other creatures may still appear in these dream sequences and interact with the Artificer and their Slugpups, such as Vultures, though these have no effect on the ensuing dreams even if Artificer or their children are attacked or killed. Almost all of Artificer's dreams take place in a single room in Garbage Wastes that is otherwise inaccessible. The different dreams are just different screens of the same room.
