Explosive Spears are a type of Spear distinguished by the strips of red cloth tied near their tips. When thrown, they explode on impact, dealing a significant amount of damage. They are usually found carried or stashed by Scavengers.

Function

Utility

Explosive Spears ignite if they embed in a creature or surface or lose too much speed midair. During ignition, they fizz and emit 3-4 small pops before emitting an explosion that deals up to 1.32 damage. If embedded into a creature, each of the small pops deals 0.6 damage, and the last explosion does 4.2 extra damage, for a total of ~7-7.6 explosion damage in addition to the Spear's standard damage. There is a 10% chance for the small pops to not appear, lowering the dealt explosive damage to ~5.2.

If an Explosive Spear hits something it cannot embed in, it detonates instantly without any ignition period. Deflecting an Explosive Spear also has a 50% chance to instantly detonate it.

The explosion is capable of killing most creatures in a single hit if embedded, and otherwise causes damage and stun dependent on the creature's proximity to the blast. The explosion can be lethal to Slugcat if they are standing too close to their target. Their explosions detonate other Explosive Spears, Grenades, Flashbangs, Beehives, and Cherrybombs in proximity.

Explosive Spears are particularly effective against Brother Long Legs and Daddy Long Legs, as they take extra damage from explosions; a single Explosive Spear to the core is generally enough to kill them.

If Slugcat is located close enough to an Explosive Spear before its detonation, they are launched a significant distance relative to their proximity to the Explosive Spear. This can be used to cross large gaps. If the player performs a successful downspear throw, the embedded Explosive Spear's explosion never deals lethal damage. This property can be used to utilize Explosive Spears for exploration more safely.

Trivia

  • The length of the red cloth on Explosive Spears is randomized.
  • Creatures hit by an Explosive Spear spawn a thin stream of smoke from their wounds.
  • Looks to the Moon describes Explosive Spears as being "made with fire powder."
