Explosive Spears are Spears draped with a red cloth, frequently found carried or stashed by Scavengers. They are used in the same way as a regular Spear, but explode shortly after embedding in a creature or surface. On initial activation they fizz and emit small pops, similar to a Cherrybomb, before emitting a large and powerful explosion, dealing 6-7.2 explosion damage plus that of the initial Spear hit. This explosion is capable of killing most creatures in a single hit if embedded, and otherwise causes damage and stun dependent on the creature's proximity to the blast.
Explosive Spears react instantly when hitting a non-embeddable surface or creature part. Their explosions detonate other Explosive Spears, Grenades, Flashbangs, Beehives, and Cherrybombs in proximity. The explosion of a single Spear is not usually lethal to the player, but can be rarely if standing directly in the center of the explosion, for example, if an Explosive Spear on Hunter's back is detonated by a nearby explosion.
Explosive Spears are typically the most effective source of damage for taking down large threats, due to their precision, explosion timer, and relative player safety. They also have some platforming utility due to their high launch speed and non-lethality.
Function
Combat
Explosive Spears deal the most damage of any weapon in the game when embedded. If it hits a surface without embedding, it detonates instantly, having the same effect as a Grenade. When embedded, it fizzles and pops like a Cherrybomb before detonating. Explosive Spears are particularly effective against Daddy Long Legs, as they take extra explosive damage, so the damage dealt by a single embedded explosion is enough to kill one if the core is hit. However, there is a chance (1/10) that the thrown spear does not pop. If this is the case, the spear isn't enough to kill it, even if it embedded.
Exploration
If the Slugcat is located near enough to an Explosive Spear before its detonation, they are launched a significant distance relative to their proximity to the Explosive Spear. This can be used to cross large gaps. If the player performs a successful downspear throw, the embedded Explosive Spear's explosion never deals lethal damage. This property can be used to utilise Explosive Spears for exploration more safely.
Trivia
- The length of the red cloth on Explosive Spears is randomized.
- Creatures hit by an Explosive Spear spawn a thin stream of smoke from their wound, and creatures hit by a Grenade leave a big trail of smoke behind as they fly away.
