Certain Lizards have differing diets and may eat creatures that other Lizards do not. Most Lizards ignore smaller prey such as Batflies or Vulture Grubs.

Being fed a baby Noodlefly

All food types are equal in reputation value, though live food is less effective, as Lizards need to catch gifted food before their reputation increases. Due to Monk's higher starting reputation, they have an easier time taming Lizards. Saving Lizards from threats, such as Vultures, causes a sharp reputation increase. Sheltering Lizards also causes an increase in reputation, and may be enough to tame a Lizard if the player's reputation is high enough. Lizards also possess a global reputation system, which impacts all Lizard behavior toward Slugcat. When Lizard reputation is extremely low, Lizards become more aggressive towards Slugcat and prioritize them over other prey. Unlike other reputation-dependent creatures, this is not shared with Slugpups, meaning Lizards always try to eat them unless tamed.

Once tamed, Lizards become passive toward Slugcat and follow them everywhere, including into shelters and through gates, unless physically unable to. Tamed Lizards also attempt to fight anything that threatens Slugcat, including creatures that normally prey on Lizards, such as Vultures, Monster Kelp, or even Leviathans. They also fight other Lizards that threaten Slugcat. While tamed Lizards may break away to bring food to a den or to fight another creature, they prioritize following Slugcat. Lizards stay tamed as long as reputation remains high, which can be maintained by feeding them or hibernating with them. Inversely, Lizard reputation is lowered when weapons are thrown near or at them. A Spear to the body typically breaks their trust. If Lizard reputation is on the lower end, they may occasionally bite Slugcat.

The player does not have direct control over a tamed Lizard, which leads to quirks that must be worked around. Tamed Lizards are still afraid of Slugcat when they are holding a Маска Стервятника, but still follow them at a distance. The effect wears off after a short period of time but renews with each successful cycle. Tamed Lizards are also still hostile towards one another, and may fight or kill one another, making it hard to have more than one tamed Lizard at the same time. Furthermore, Scavengers and Lizards are still hostile towards one another no matter Slugcat's reputation.

Attribute Generation

Lizard attributes, like other creatures such as Scavengers, are tied to a numerical seed; each seed always generates the same attributes when used. Both personality modifiers and physical traits are generated by and tied to the specific seed.

Personality

Lizards have 6 personality modifiers: energy, bravery, sympathy, dominance, nervous and aggression.

  • Energy impacts aggression, dominance and nervous. High values make White Lizards and Salamanders less likely to lurk and more likely to abandon lurking for other actions (such as pursuing the player).
  • Bravery does not influence Lizard behavior directly, but impacts aggression, dominance and nervous.
  • Sympathy does not influence Lizard behavior directly but impacts aggression.
  • Dominance can skew taming difficulty - lower values can make individuals easier to tame, whereas higher values make them harder to (up to ±10% difficulty). For Yellow Lizards, the highest dominance Lizard is chosen as the pack's leader.
  • Nervous does not affect Lizard behavior.
  • Aggression does not influence Lizard behavior directly but impacts dominance.

It should be noted that the impact these variables have on moment-to-moment gameplay fluctuates wildly.

Physical Traits

All images depict Lizards without any physical traits other than the ones described.

The main physical traits of a Lizard can be categorized into 4 groups: Skins, Cosmetics, Scales, and Heads. Each seed generates a random amount of cosmetic features and a random number of scales for each, which are then distributed along a Lizard species' cosmetic pattern. The way these features are generated depend on the Lizard species, with some being skewed towards or always exhibiting specific trails. For instance, Blue Lizards are likely to present with the TailTuft cosmetic, while Salamanders always have AxolotlGills. Lizards have one randomly generated main color, which is then applied to the rest of the body multiplicatively. Lizard body proportions largely depend on the species, but can be subjected to scale modifiers on their torso and tail.

Skins

Lizards have 4 skin types which are tied to their species, determining how colors are exhibited on their bodies. The More Slugcats Expansion adds 2 additional skin types.

These names do not correspond to any specific labelled parameters in code, but instead refer to a collection of methods (e.g. InitiateSprites, DrawSprites) within the LizardGraphics class that are applied to certain species. They are named for convenience of discussion.

Cosmetic Features

Lizards have 7 universal cosmetic features; almost any species can exhibit them, though most species are skewed in favor of having certain cosmetics. Lizards may have a single cosmetic feature, multiple, or none at all. They may also have a gradient on their tail-tips independent of any cosmetic feature. Generation of cosmetic features typically skews symmetrical, but it is not uncommon to find asymmetry.

There are 5 further cosmetic features that are species exclusive. The More Slugcats Expansion adds 1 additional species-unique cosmetic.

In addition to this, each Lizard species has its own cosmetic pattern, which serves as a guideline to how scales are arranged on a Lizard's body. This allows each species to have a distinctive appearance despite using the same cosmetic.

Cosmetic Feature Generation

This table only shows the average chances for each Lizard species to present with a cosmetic feature, and is not always accurate to in-game interactions. Cosmetic features have many different variables, such as depending on if additional features have been applied, if specific features have been applied, if no features have been applied, species type, and more.

Scale Types

Furthermore, many cosmetic features can inherit one of the 7 scale types, which alters the shape of each feature's scale. Each cosmetic feature can only inherit one scale type, and an individual Lizard can only possess up to 4 distinct scale types. Scales inherit the skin color by default but may have a gradient applied to them too.

Scales can be affected by the rigor (stiffness), scale (size), length and roundness modifiers.

Head Types

Lizards may also present with different head shapes. In the vanilla version of the game, only three variations of head exist in the game; the 'default' head, used for almost all Lizard types, a bulkier, square-shaped head used for Green Lizards, and a rounded head used for Salamanders. These sprites can be scaled depending on the species and generated size of the Lizard.

The More Slugcats Expansion adds five additional head sprites; 2 variations for the Caramel Lizard, and 3 variations for the Lizards in Святой's campaign, which feature fur and horns.

Voices

As of the 1.9 Remix update, all Lizard types (excluding Strawberry and Train Lizards) have a unique voice type, as well as a "Love Voice" which is used when the Lizard catches a food item thrown to them by Slugcat. While all Lizards have their own unique voices, there are only 3 Love Voices: Gen, Red and Cyan. Every other Lizard uses the "gen" Love Voice. Each voice variant also has a letter sub-variant; most have a maximum of 3, but Pinks have 5.

Trivia

Green, Pink, Blue, White, Yellow and Red Lizard Eggs in Alpha_8 version.
  • Lizards were the first creatures designed for the game, and originally the only predator present.
    • They were also originally intended to be the only predator present, but this changed with the introduction of the Vulture.
    • They were referred to as "crocs" very early in development.
    • The earliest available footage of lizards
    • In some alpha builds the player could hunt down and steal Lizard Eggs.
  • Lizards have a rivalry system which causes them to get into territorial fights. They start by hissing at each other, trying to get the other to back off, eventually escalating to an all-out fight. They continue fighting until either one submits and leaves the room or they are distracted by prey.
  • Certain species of Lizard eat other Lizards. Green Lizards, Cyan Lizards and ✔️DLC Caramel Lizards can eat Blue Lizards. Green Lizards, Pink Lizards, Blue Lizards, Yellow Lizards, Red Lizards and ✔️DLC Caramel Lizards eat ✔️DLC Strawberry Lizards.
  • Salamanders and ✔️DLC Eel Lizards do not count for Драконоборец.
  • When hit by a Spitter Spider's dart, anything incapacitated in a Lizard's mouth stays there even while the Lizard is unconscious.
  • All Lizards are capable of hearing prey and vibrate and emit particles from their head when they hear noise nearby. They become more and more aggressive toward investigating sounds the more noise any creature emits in rapid succession.
  • Lizards have 71 shared code profile parameters, most of which are used in calculations with other values.
