Outer Expanse is a region added in the Downpour DLC. It is separated from the rest of the world by a locked Karma Gate in the westernmost place of Subterranean. It is a lush and lively place, dotted with ruins of the Ancients.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Outer Expanse is a lush amalgam of sprawling uneven terrain, cavernous networks filled with swathes of overgrowth, and dilapidated ruins in its background. The region is adorned with various massive protrusions of flora, some tinted by a tangerine hue. Its background is dominated by various clouds and the looming presence of the Five Pebbles superstructure.
Due to the Outer Expanse being elevated above the clouds, it does not experience the Rain, instead experiencing a night period in similar manners to the Metropolis. However, certain sub-regions do still experience rain, such as the Sunken Pier.
Outer Expanse is a home to a number of unique creatures, the best known being the Slugcats. The Karma Gate was placed under lock-down by
Five Pebbles to keep the creatures of the place from ransacking his and
Looks to the Moon's facility grounds. It can be only explored by
Gourmand at first, once they meet Five Pebbles. After their ending is completed, the
Survivor and the
Monk gain access to the region as well.

Points of Interest[edit | edit source]
Subregions[edit | edit source]
Sunken Pier[edit | edit source]
The outer remains of the Subterranean pier the Ancients used to send supplies to the Iterators. Consists of a network of various catwalk-like structures and rails, elevated over open grey clouds from atop grand towers. The lowermost areas are linear swamplands, casted in darkness and only illuminated by luminescent flora and spotlights. The Sunken Pier is susceptible to the Rain.
It contains the region's only colored pearl.
Facility Roots (Western Intake)[edit | edit source]
The roots of Five Pebbles and Looks to the Moon's water-pumping lymphatic systems. The Spearmaster campaign starts in Outskirts right after exiting the Facility Roots. It acts as a one-way connection to the Outskirts, with the Karma gate leading to an underground pumping station.
Journey's End[edit | edit source]
The tree-home of the Slugcats seen in Survivor and
Monk's opening cut-scenes can be found here. A long drop can be found here, which connects to
Outskirts.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- This region is the original homeland of Survivor and Monk, and quite likely the natural habitat of the
Slugcat species.
- The long drop connecting to Outskirts is likely where Survivor and Monk were washed away by the rain in their intros.
- This is supported by the music that plays upon entering the area, Pictures of the Past, the same track that plays in the intros of Survivor and Monk.
- The sub-region Sunken Pier features threat music layers unique to it.
- Journey's End at night features threat music layers unique to it.
- On approaching the Journey's End tree as a
Slugcat that can't normally access it, it still ends the game, and gives the ending achievement.
