Outskirts is the starting Region for Monk,
Survivor and
Spearmaster. It is a tutorial region, making it typically trivial to travel. It consists of various industrial flats and eroded tunnels, inhabited primarily by
Lizards. It is utilised often as an entrance to
Industrial Complex.
Overview[edit | edit source]
As the first region explored by new players following the intended game route, Outskirts features a tutorial area and offers many low risk opportunities to learn basic game mechanics and interact with creatures. It features many poles and pipes that allow evasion of predators, and most routes through the region loop back to where they came from, making it hard to get lost or cornered. It is devoid of the game's tougher predators, prominently featuring Green and
Pink Lizards,
Squidcadas and a
Scavenger Toll. Rainbows have a chance to appear in certain rooms at the start of a cycle.
Visually, Outskirts consists primarily of linear plots of metallic surfaces, extrusions of rebar and metal, paired with various ambiguously designed structures. A grey fog lingers in the background, paired with various strands of chartreuse and forest-green overgrowth. Deeper in the Outskirts are various tunnel-like networks, sparsely illuminated by magenta lighting, paired with more enclosed piping. Despite the region being rudimentary to traverse, certain areas may lead to dead ends which result in one needing to backtrack or utilise a Spear to navigate out of, meaning traversal may be slightly difficult especially on ones first encounter with the region. Fortunately any dead ends are likely to harbour a nearby pipes that wind back to where one initially was.

Points of Interest[edit | edit source]
Tips[edit | edit source]
- After a few cycles, the
Overseer begins directing players towards a gate, typically the one leading to
Industrial Complex as this is the suggested path of progression in the game. The other regions connecting to Outskirts are considerably more difficult for newer players to adapt to.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Outskirts was originally called Suburban during early development, hence its acronym SU.
- Outskirts was one of the 4 regions present in early alpha versions of the game.
- Despite being overhauled later in development, many of Outskirts' rooms have stayed the same since the early builds.
- The rightmost area of the map has no apparent features of interest, as it does not connect to any additional area and has no unique Unlockables.
- In some earlier builds (such as the one shown in Rain World Alpha - PUPS!! at 1:17), SU_A40, the current right-most room of Outskirts, did further connect to the right. It's unknown where this was originally intended to connect to.
Noodleflies are the only creature able to go in and out of the tutorial area.
- There are numerous known methods to revisit the tutorial area after first leaving.
