Sea Leeches are a large, blue variety of Leech. They are fast and heavy, and they attack in coordinated swarms, making them adept at hunting and drowning other creatures. Sea Leeches are most commonly found throughout Shoreline.

Appearance

Sea Leaches are long, blue, tubular creatures that wiggle as they move. They are larger than other Leech variants.

Tips

Evasion

Sea Leeches are the fastest Leeches and thus can be difficult to evade. Sea Leeches share the same vulnerabilities as other Leeches; they are stunned for a significant period of time by Snail shockwaves, which can be used to pass safely. Because they are found in Shoreline, Jetfish are readily available and may be used to bypass them, as Leeches cannot latch onto Slugcat while they are riding a Jetfish.

If other options are unavailable, it is possible to avoid Sea Leeches underwater by dodging their lunges. They are only able to latch on during a lunge, and they cannot change directions while lunging, providing an opportunity to dodge via moving perpendicularly or swim boosting.

Having at least one Sea Leech attached alerts the entire swarm to Slugcat's location, so if any Sea Leeches have latched on, it is safer to allow them to fall off before returning to the water.

Abilities & Behavior

Sea Leeches swimming

Swarms of Sea Leeches swim together in an elliptical pattern that covers a large vertical area in a single location. They chase and lunge at creatures in the water in an attempt to latch on, and they can jump out of the water as they do so. They are only capable of latching on during a lunge. Once a single Sea Leech attaches to a target, the rest of the swarm pursues the target regardless of distance, even if the target leaves the water. Once all Sea Leeches have detached from a creature, the swarm returns to its original hunting ground.

Sea Leeches are the fastest and heaviest type of Leech, and they can easily overwhelm and drown Slugcat and other creatures. Only a few Sea Leeches are needed to weigh down Slugcat. As with other Leeches, they remain attached for a short time after drowning a creature, then leave to search for new prey.

While outside of water, Sea Leeches gradually 'dry out' and detach from creatures after a period of time. Unlike Red Leeches, this does not cause them to darken in color. Upon detaching, they attempt to return to the nearest body of water. Their mobility on land is limited, and they are only capable of slowly crawling along the ground and clearing 1-tile-high jumps. Their movement slows the longer they are outside of water. If they remain out of water for ~23 seconds, they die.

Trivia

  • Jetfish hunt Sea Leeches, but since they attack one Leech at time, it is impractical to use this against a group of Sea Leeches.
  • Although it is difficult to see naturally, Leeches attack Leviathans. The Leviathan has no reaction to this, and the Leech most likely stays attached to it indefinitely, as the Leviathan cannot drown.
