Shaded Citadel is an early to mid-game region, characterized by dark, decrepit hallways and dangerous infested lower pathways. It is considered a challenging early-game region for new players. While traveling without a light source is not impossible, it is highly recommended for first time visitors. It is the starting region for DLC icon.pngGourmand head.png Gourmand.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The middle and lower areas of Shaded Citadel are pitch-black, only acutely illuminated by swarming Fireflies, forcing players to either find a light source or use the map to navigate level geometry. These rooms are often infested with Coalescipede icon.png Coalescipedes, but can mostly be avoided by passing through the upper, lighter rooms of the region. The visual traits of the region indicate it to be a cathedral, with various shrines and sprawling spaces hinting at this possibility.

A dark and partially submerged sewer-like area inhabited by Monster Kelp icon.png Monster Kelp can be found at the deepest point of the citadel. In the DLC icon.pngDownpour DLC, this area features an abundance of Lilypuck icon.png Lilypucks. These lower areas of the region double as an entrance point to the Memory Crypts, and in turn The Exterior Safari Icon.png The Exterior.

Lantern icon.png Lanterns can be bought with a RWPearl.png Pearl or stolen from Scavenger icon.png Scavengers or the Scavenger Merchant icon.png Scavenger Merchant in the region. It is also possible to pick up and carry Lantern Mouse icon.png Lantern Mice as a light source, although this weighs Slugcat head.png Slugcat down considerably. Flashbang icon.png Flashbangs can also be found growing on tall stems in some lower areas which, when picked off the stem and thrown, illuminate the screen and instantly kill or stun any photosensitive creatures nearby.

The deepest parts of the citadel can be accessed with minimal threat from Spiders by heading down and left from the central tower shelter.

    Slugcat no right.pngSPOILER WARNING: Subregion
This section contains details concerning a subregion(s) of this region. If you have not yet visited this area, then read no further!

Memory Crypts is a dark, open and linear area accessed from the deepest sewer sections of Shaded Citadel. There are no shelters within this area. Packs of Miros Bird icon.png Miros Birds roam the landscape, attacking whatever they find. This, combined with the length of the area, forces the player to move quickly enough to avoid the end of cycle rain while stopping and hiding from passing Miros Birds. Intermittent flashes of green lightning and thunder punctuate the journey as fireflies drift back and forth above the terrain.

  • Tips[edit | edit source]

    • Memory Crypts has no threat music, but approaching Miros Birds can be heard from offscreen due to the loud clanking noises they make when moving.
    • Spear icon.png Spears spawn randomly and have a few guaranteed spawn points across the sub-region. These can be embedded in walls to travel over terrain more quickly than going in the tunnels underneath.
    • Flashbang icon.png Flashbangs also spawn at set points through the sub-region and blind Miros Birds for up to 10 seconds when thrown in their vicinity.
    • Discarding or swallowing Lantern icon.png Lanterns in favor of other more useful items is recommended as Memory Crypts is bright enough to travel without one.
