Outer Expanse is a region exclusive to ✔️DLCDownpour. It is a lush region filled with ruins left behind by the Ancients. It is separated from the rest of the world by a locked Karma Gate in the westernmost area of Subterranean. Initially, it can only be accessed by Gourmand after encountering Five Pebbles and becomes accessible to Survivor and Monk after the completion of Gourmand's campaign.

Before being unlocked, the gate to Outer Expanse is inaccessible and shows a icon.

Overview

Outer Expanse comprises uneven terrain, cavernous networks filled with swathes of overgrowth, and ruins in its background. Present in the region are various types of unique plants, some tinted by a tangerine hue. The sky is often seen with golden clouds, and in some screens Five Pebbles' superstructure can be seen in the distance.

Due to the Outer Expanse being located outside the influence of any Iterator Superstructures, much of the region does not experience rain, instead transitioning to a night period in a similar manner to Metropolis. However, the eastern parts still experience rain, such as the Sunken Pier subregion. Some Shelters in this region have multiple connections and an exclusive H shape and icon. Around the rightmost of these shelters, a long drop that connects to Outskirts can be found.

Outer Expanse is home to a number of unique creatures, notably including Slugcats. Yeeks are prevalent in the middle and western areas of the region. Some pools of water are filled with Jungle Leeches.

The Karma Gate to Subterranean was placed under lock-down by Five Pebbles to keep the creatures of the place from ransacking his and Looks to the Moon's facility grounds, but reopened after he realized that this prevented creatures like Slugcats from exiting these regions.

    Subregions

    Sunken Pier

Sunken Pier is the outer remains of the Subterranean pier that the Ancients used to send supplies to the Iterators. It consists of a network of various catwalk-like structures and rails, elevated over open gray clouds from atop grand towers. The lowermost areas are linear swamplands, cast in darkness and lit by luminescent flora and floodlights. To pass through this subregion, Slugcat must either pass a Scavenger Toll or leap over a large gap between overhanging rails. It contains the region's only Colored Pearl.

    Journey's End

The end-game subregion on the west side, Journey's End, has a lighter background tone, flatter terrain, and quieter ecology. The tree-home of the Slugcats seen in Survivor and Monk's opening cutscenes can be found here. Gourmand, Survivor, and Monk may return home and end their campaigns here.

    Facility Roots (Western Intake)

A long drop on the eastern side of Outer Expanse leads to a long one-way water pipe that rapidly propels Slugcat through until they reach Facility Roots, the roots of Five Pebbles and Looks to the Moon's water-pumping lymphatic systems. It acts as a one-way connection to Outskirts with a Karma Gate leading to an underground pumping station.

    Trivia

    • Outer Expanse is the original homeland of Survivor and Monk and likely the natural habitat of the Slugcat species.
    • The long drop connecting to Outskirts is likely where Survivor and Monk were washed away by the rain in their opening cutscenes.
      • This is supported by the music that plays upon entering the area, Pictures of the Past, the same track that plays in the intros of Survivor and Monk.
    • Journey's End at night and Sunken Pier both feature unique threat music layers.
