This page concerns the Game Mode under the tab labeled 'Story' on the Main Menu. For information on the events that take place within the game, see Plot and Endings. For Information beyond the in-game events, see Lore of Rain World for the world defined within the Base Game content, and Lore of Rain World: Downpour for a separate comprehensive covering on the world of Downpour.

Story Mode is the main game mode featured within Rain World, with a selection of 3 campaigns in the Base Game, each corresponding to the journey of a different Slugcat; The Monk, The Survivor, and The Hunter. The Downpour DLC adds five new Slugcat campaigns; The Gourmand, The Artificer, The Rivulet, The Spearmaster, and The Saint, alongside an additional 'secret' campaign.

Campaign Selection

Besides from starting or selecting a campaign with the left and right arrow buttons, other options include checkboxes to the right of each campaign selection, one for restarting an already started/completed campaign when selecting a campaign, resetting all of your progress except map exploration, along with a toggle for customizing the colors of the player Slugcat.

The Monk campaign corresponds to an 'easy mode,' featuring less hostile and deadly Creatures alongside various assists, although some player stats are reduced slightly. "Weak of body but strong of spirit. In tune with the mysteries of the world and empathetic to its creatures, your journey will be a significantly more peaceful one."

The Survivor campaign is the default and original experience of the game, corresponding to a 'normal difficulty.' "A nimble omnivore, both predator and prey. Lost in a harsh and indifferent land you must make your own way, with wit and caution as your greatest assets."

The Hunter campaign corresponds to a 'hard mode,' unlocked by clearing the game as Survivor or Monk, featuring new more hostile and deadly Creatures, with a general improvement in player stats alongside the ability to store an additional Spear on the Slugcat's back, with the main pressure being a time limit of 20 in-game Cycles. "Strong and quick, with a fierce metabolism requiring a steady diet of meat. But the stomach wont be your only concern, as the path of the hunter is one of extreme peril."

Downpour

With the Downpour DLC, the first new Slugcat campaign is unlocked by completing the main story either as the Monk or the Survivor; The Gourmand, "An indulger of the simpler pleasures in life. Carrying the world in your stomach gives many tactical advantages, but comes at an increased cost of sustainability." They are a rotund and gluttonous creature that can use their mass to their advantage but often times as a detriment to their agility, capable of utilizing an array of items to craft new ones, alongside using two different foods to craft a 'meal,' gaining extra food in the process.

The second additional campaign is also unlocked by completing the main story either as the Monk or the Survivor; The Artificer, "A fierce combatant, master of pyrotechnics and explosives. Keen to move up in the foodchain, your journey will surely be one lined with constant bloodshed and warfare."

The third selection is unlocked by clearing the game as Gourmand, Artificer, or Hunter; The Rivulet, "Breathes underwater, and moves through the world with ease. These adaptations are essential, as you'll be pitted against a world of increasingly frequent floods, where time is of the essence."

The fourth campaign is unlocked by completing the Rivulet campaign; The Spearmaster, "An abnormality who feeds using needles pulled from its body. A traveller from a far away land; A feeling in your depths sets you out once again, messenger..."

The fifth and final new campaign is unlocked by clearing the game as Rivulet and Spearmaster; The Saint, "Frail and armed with a long tongue. Your journey will be one of perfect enlightenment, but walking this path requires patience, caution, and complete attunement with the world.".
