Trivia is transcluded from this page and used on the main page "Did you know" Section.
Did You Know?[edit | edit source]
Jellyfish's shock deals 0.1 damage to creatures.
- There is a 1/10,000,000 (one in ten million) chance that a
Red Lizard's bite may fail.
Red Centipedes always have 18 segments.
- The cooldown before a
Spear can be picked up again lasts exactly 15 frames.
- Unheld
Bubble Weed floats to the top of a region gate during the heating part of the gate sequence.
- Each
Beehive insect deals a minuscule amount of damage to non-player creatures.
Regions Trivia[edit | edit source]
Outskirts[edit | edit source]
- Outskirts was originally called Suburban.
- Early alpha versions of the game had 4 regions: Outskirts, Drainage System, Industrial Complex, and Chimney Canopy.
- It is possible for
Noodleflies to reach the tutorial area.
- There are numerous known methods to revisit the tutorial area after first leaving.
Industrial Complex[edit | edit source]
- Industrial Complex was originally called Heavy Industrial.
- With 4 gates, Industrial Complex has the highest number of unique region connections in the base game.
Garbage Wastes[edit | edit source]
- It is possible to sit inside the pipe connection at the top of the
Red Lizard unlock room without drowning.
Shoreline[edit | edit source]
- It is possible to bring
Scavengers into Shoreline by loading the region while in a Karma Gate room with them. They can then be found in Looks to the Moon.
Leviathans can eat
Vultures.
Shaded Citadel[edit | edit source]
- Shaded Citadel was originally called Shadow Urban.
- In room SH_B11, there are 20
Coalescipedes that cannot reach the player due to level geometry.
Five Pebbles[edit | edit source]
- When playing
Monk, Unfortunate Development is more challenging due to increased amounts of proto DLLs.
- Unfortunate Development is an entirely optional subregion.
- It is possible to avoid Recursive Transform Array by taking a shortcut through the center of the map.
- Creatures inside Five Pebbles return to shelters once the timer runs out, which can be exploited to travel through the region without encountering hazards.
Subterranean[edit | edit source]
- It is possible to scale the western fissure in Subterranean with
Spears, a
Grappling Worm or
Explosives.
- It is possible to return to Filtration System after reaching the Depths.
Creatures Trivia[edit | edit source]
Lizards[edit | edit source]
Lizards were the first creatures designed for the game, and originally the only predator present.
Lizards were called "crocs" very early on in development.
- Some alpha builds of the game have the player stealing Lizard Eggs.
Lizards have an advanced rivalry system which causes them to get into territorial fights.
- When hit by a
Spitter Spider's dart, anything incapacitated in a Lizard's mouth stays there even whilst the Lizard is paralysed.
Lizards emit particles from their head when they hear noise nearby.
Lizards become more and more aggressive toward investigating sounds the more noise any creature emits in rapid successions.
Lizards have 71 shared code profile parameters, most of which are used in calculations with other values.
Green Lizard[edit | edit source]
Green Lizards are relatively fast swimmers and are much quicker over water, but are rarely found near it.
Green Lizards have the highest inter-species aggressiveness in the game.
Green Lizards are immune to
Red Lizard bites, unless the Red is tamed.
Green Lizards cannot be eaten by
Brother Long Legs.
Vulture Masks only pacify
Green Lizards instead of scaring them.
Green Lizards cannot be killed by direct
Centipede shocks. They can still be killed by shocks in water.
Green Lizards are immune to
Worm Grass.
Green Lizards are strong enough to escape
Pole Plants.
- Hitting a
Green Lizard with Rubbish while they are preparing to charge can cause them to flip and charge in the other direction.
- Creatures that are directly in front of a
Green Lizard's face cannot be bitten by them.
- When falling,
Green Lizards try to cling on to poles in an attempt to save themselves.
- Certain
Green Lizards may be observed attempting to climb poles when chasing prey, though they will be unable to.
Blue Lizard[edit | edit source]
Blue Lizards have the lowest toughness and bite lethality of all lizard species.
Blue Lizards can be hunted and eaten by
Green and
Cyan Lizards.
Blue Lizards have the ability to walk on ceilings, unlike
White Lizards.
Salamander[edit | edit source]
Salamanders have the same movement speed in water as
Pink,
Black and
White Lizards.
- Neither variety of
Leeches attack
Salamanders.
Salamanders can snap and kill
Batflies.
Black Lizard[edit | edit source]
- Some
Black Lizards have vestigial eyes that are visible when their heads light up.
Yellow Lizard[edit | edit source]
Yellow Lizards have no intra-species rivalry.
- If a
Yellow Lizard thinks it is in a pack of 0 lizards, the game crashes.
Vulture[edit | edit source]
Vultures and
Green Lizards ignore each other unless the latter has been tamed.
Vultures can rarely travel through pipes, though this is an unintended behavior.
- The mandibles on
Vultures' faces are called "tusks" in the files.
Pole Plant[edit | edit source]
Pole Plants and Monster Kelp cannot be tranquilized by
Spitter Spiders' Dart Maggots.
Pole Plants can be found facing sideways (in Sky Islands) and downwards (in one room in Farm Arrays).
- Certain
Pole Plants can lineage into
Monster Kelp after being killed enough times.
- The insects released by
Beehives do not attack
Pole Plants. Pole Plants also do not block thrown beehives.
- While dying,
Pole Plants can sometimes grab on to nearby creatures and pull them in. This can softlock the player.
Monster Kelp[edit | edit source]
Monster Kelp can grab and consume held objects such as
Lanterns instead of the player.
Leeches[edit | edit source]
Jetfish and
Squidcadas hunt Leeches for food.
Centipedes[edit | edit source]
Centipedes have a small chance to spawn missing a section of their shell.
Centipedes cannot be stunned by rocks unless injured.
Centipedes can kill the player by retreating into a den while being grabbed.
Centipede shocks in water affect all creatures in that body of water.
Centipedes shocks in water can kill creatures that would otherwise be stunned, such as
Rain Deer or
Green Lizards.
Centiwings can have 12 or 13 segments.
Coalescipede[edit | edit source]
- A low ambient drone plays in some areas where
Coalescipedes are often present.
- In room SH_B11 of
Shaded Citadel, there are 20
Coalescipedes that cannot reach the player due to level geometry.
Big Spider[edit | edit source]
Big Spiders and
Spitter Spiders slowly regenerate health over time.
Big Spider fangs are visible when bared even in complete darkness.
- Like other
Slugcat-sized creatures,
Big Spiders' corpses can boost the player's speed in tunnels when held.
Dropwig[edit | edit source]
- Multiple
Dropwigs are able to perch on the same spot, but prefer not to.
- Lower dominance
Dropwigs will give up spots to higher dominance Dropwigs.
- Like other
Slugcat-sized creatures,
Dropwigs' corpses can boost the player's speed in tunnels when held.
Dropwigs are capable of grabbing
Garbage Worms and may even move them from their spawn point.
Dropwigs can rarely spawn with a
Pearl.
Brother Long Legs[edit | edit source]
Brother Long Legs are unable to eat creatures that exceed their own mass, such as
Green Lizards or
Vultures.
Leviathan[edit | edit source]
Leviathans can eat all other creatures, including other Leviathans.
Leviathans are functionally immortal but can be killed with an incredibly large stockpile of
Explosives and enough time.
- A single albino
Leviathan spawns in the western lake in Subterranean.
Leviathans can be eaten by
Monster Kelp.
- The metal plate asset on the front of
Leviathans can also be seen on the upper bodies of
Squidcadas.
Miros Bird[edit | edit source]
Miros Birds run away from
Brother Long Legs &
Daddy Long Legs.
Miros Birds are inspired by the paintings of Joan Miró.
Daddy Long Legs[edit | edit source]
Daddy Long Legs are temporarily deafened by loud noises produced by
Explosives or thunder.
Daddy Long Legs are aggressive towards
Brother Long Legs and attempt to consume them.
Worm Grass[edit | edit source]
Green Lizards are uniquely coded to be immune to
Worm Grass.
Worm Grass hunts by sight and is insensitive to sound and movement.
- Some patches of
Worm Grass in Farm Arrays can appear white due to a rendering error.
Coalescipedes,
Big Spiders and
Spitter Spiders hover above
Red Worm Grass instead of getting pulled into it. This is a bug.
Hazers killed by
Worm Grass often have broken physics.
Bugs[edit | edit source]
- A swarm of Water Glow-Worms spawns in one room where there is no water and so can never be seen.
- Ants are often obscured by the foreground due to a likely bug in their code.
Overseer[edit | edit source]
Overseers can communicate and touch tendrils with each other.
- The
yellow overseer will always return when killed.
Squidcada[edit | edit source]
- It is possible to bring multiple
Squidcadas from one region to another, starting with a white one and then bringing multiple black ones, resulting in a "colony".
Noodlefly[edit | edit source]
Noodleflies die being grabbed even if immediately released.
- It's possible for two
Noodleflies to stab each other and die simultaneously.
- When an
Infant Noodlefly cries out, the nearest adult attacks the closest creature to the offspring.
Noodleflies cannot kill
Overseers but can still aggro onto them.
Garbage Worm[edit | edit source]
Garbage Worms don't flee when the rain arrives.
Snail[edit | edit source]
Snails give a burst of range and speed to certain moves when held including backflips, longjumps, and walljumps. This is likely a quirk of the physics engine.
Snail pops are much stronger in water.
Scavenger[edit | edit source]
Scavengers were originally intended to glide, but this feature was scrapped due to pathfinding issues.
Scavengers are hostile towards
Overseers and throw spears at them.
Scavengers have three slots for holding items (two hands and a "pocket slot" on their side) and can hold extra spears on their back.
- Garbage Wastes has the highest number of
Scavenger spawns, at 26 on all difficulties.
- Like other
Slugcat-sized creatures,
Scavengers' corpses can boost the player's speed in tunnels when held.
Lantern Mouse[edit | edit source]
Lantern Mice cannot move in bodies of water.
Lantern Mice and
Scavengers ignore each other.
Lantern Mice have a 1/17 chance of facing the opposite way and a 1/8 chance of hanging their hands down when sleeping.
- There is a 1/100 chance that any individual
Lantern Mouse has a completely random hue.
Jetfish[edit | edit source]
Jetfish are immune to
Leeches, and extend this immunity to
Slugcat when riding one.
- In v1.5,
Jetfish reputation can only be decreased.
Jetfish do a small amount of damage when ramming, and can accidentally kill each other when harassing other creatures.
- All Jetfish in
Subterranean and
Pipeyard are albino.
Bubble Fruit and
Blue Fruit reflect thrown
Spears.
Grappling Worm[edit | edit source]
Grappling Worms used to be much heavier prior to update 1.5.
Rain Deer[edit | edit source]
- Decorated skulls of
Rain Deer can be found at
Scavenger Tolls.
- Damaging
Rain Deer with
Spears pushes them forward.
Batfly[edit | edit source]
Squidcadas,
Jetfish,
Pole Plants, and
Monster Kelp actively hunt
Batflies
Eggbug[edit | edit source]
Eggbugs can fling themselves off edges when trying to evade creatures and projectiles.
Vulture Grub[edit | edit source]
- There is a single live
Vulture Grub in Chimney Canopy that never respawns.
Hazer[edit | edit source]
Hazers do not spawn in water, only on land nearby.
- When regurgitated, live
Hazers have a 40% chance to copy
Slugcat's color.
Jellyfish[edit | edit source]
Jellyfish's shock deals 0.1 damage to creatures.
- In water,
Jellyfish may grab onto creatures below them with their tentacles, delivering a much weaker shock.
Centipedes are immune to the
Jellyfish's shock.
Slugcat can grab and hold onto
Jellyfish even while they're flashing white.
Jellyfish are capable of stunning creatures even when partially eaten.
Red Lizard[edit | edit source]
Red Lizards have the highest visual range, swimming speed, and water vision of any
Lizards.
Red Lizards attack other
Red Lizards on sight. They are mostly neutral towards other
Lizards.
Red Lizards can easily kill
Vultures.
Red Lizards can still fire projectiles even when holding a corpse in their mouths
Red Lizards are capable of biting every frame.
- There is a 1/10,000,000 (one in ten million) chance that a
Red Lizard's bite may fail.
King Vulture[edit | edit source]
King Vultures shoot at
Vulture Grubs with their harpoons.
Spitter Spider[edit | edit source]
Spitter Spiders cannot be killed by
Flashbangs.
Spitter Spiders do not attempt to tranquilize
Red Lizards even when threatened.
Red Centipede[edit | edit source]
Monk has an 40% chance on average to knock a
Red Centipede's Shell segment off with a
Spear.
Red Centipedes take only 1/29th of base damage when shielded segments are hit.
Red Centipedes are always stunned when hit by rubbish on de-shelled segments.
Red Centipedes always have 18 segments.
Objects Trivia[edit | edit source]
Popcorn Plant[edit | edit source]
Popcorn Plants are the only food item that
Slugcat automatically eats within range.
Bubble Fruit[edit | edit source]
- Holding
Bubble Fruit as it swells up causes it to fall out of
Slugcat's hand.
Rubbish[edit | edit source]
Rubbish is the only object that has multiple unique sprites in the base game.
Red Lizards can't be flipped over or stunned by Rubbish.
Spear[edit | edit source]
Spears can collide and deflect each other mid-air.
- The cooldown before a
Spear can be picked up again lasts exactly 15 frames.
Spears embedded into surfaces fall out after 3-6 cycles. They can be found again near the spot where they were embedded.
Explosive Spear[edit | edit source]
- The length of the red cloth on
Explosive Spears is randomized.
- Creatures hit by an
Explosive Spear spawn a thin stream of smoke from their wound, and creatures hit by
Grenades leave a trail of smoke behind them as they are launched.
Bubble Weed[edit | edit source]
- Holding two stalks of
Bubble Weed underwater drain both reserves with no added benefit.
- Unheld
Bubble Weed floats to the top of a region gate during the heating part of the gate sequence.
Vulture Mask[edit | edit source]
- Maskless
Vultures are attacked by other Vultures with masks.
Vulture Masks rapidly darken and saturate in color after being removed from their
Vulture.
Lantern[edit | edit source]
Lanterns generate the same radius of light as
Neuron Flies.
Beehive[edit | edit source]
- It is possible to be killed by
Beehives through a glitch.
- Each
Beehive insect deals a minuscule amount of damage to non-player creatures.
Miscellaneous Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The song "Grumblebum" samples a short voice recording of James and Joar talking at PAX.
